Raymond Butts Obituary

Obituary: Raymond Dower Butts – 04/19/1927 – 02/24/2024 Ray died peacefully at home just two months short of his 97th birthday. He is survived by his loving wife, Kay Decker-Butts, his son, Michael Butts, and his daughters, Kathleen Butts and Elizabeth Green, as well as his sons-in-law, Rick Brennan and C.J. Spirito, his grandsons, Miles and Kelly Butts-Spirito, his step-son, John Decker, his daughter-in-law, Suzanne Decker, and his granddaughters, Emma and Katie Decker. Ray grew up the only child of Catherine Dower Butts and Ray Beaver Butts in Green Island and Rensselaer, NY, in the enjoyable company of many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins who were like siblings to him. He went into the Seminary and then spent 15 years as an ordained Catholic priest. He loved working with Church communities and teaching in the Seminary during that time. After leaving the priesthood, he married Rosalie Butts in 1967 and they created a family. They were together for 26 years, during which time he was a devoted husband, father, son, and faculty/administrator at Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA, which he loved. He also enjoyed reading, playing any and all sports, running, hiking, camping and spending quality time with family and friends. In 2001, he married Kay Decker. They were together until his death, enjoying their combined families, ball room dancing, traveling, talking politics, being part of their Church community, and being good life partners and friends to each other. Ray was engaged in spiritual and religious questioning and dialogue throughout his life and wrote a book of essays about his musings in 2008. In his later years, he continued to be very involved with the Church as a lector and outreach volunteer. He was a life-long learner and history buff. Ray loved being alive and was sought out by many for his wisdom, kindness, warmth, playfulness, and positive and engaging energy. He will be sorely missed by all of us. Funeral home visiting hours will be held at the O’Keefe Wade Funeral Home, 70 Washington St., Taunton, ma 02780 on Friday, March 1st from 9:30-10:30 am.
