Noreen Ann Mendes Obituary

Noreen Ann (Whitters) Mendes, 82, of Taunton, passed away at the Arbors Assisted Living facility on Saturday, January 4th, 2025. She died after suffering a prolonged illness. Noreen was born in Taunton to the late John and Nora (Pelton) Whitters. She graduated from Saint Mary's High School in the class of 1960. She became Mrs. Mendes when she married Richard Joseph Mendes in 1961. Noreen devoted her life to family and faith. Noreen was a communicant at St. Mary’s Church of Taunton for most of her adult life and received the Marian Medal. She was also a member of the Gaelic Society and the Women’s Guild. She worked for the City of Taunton in various positions until she retired from the Cemetery Department. As a mother, Noreen spent weekends driving her son to hockey practices and games in Taunton, Bridgewater, and Scituate. She also drove her daughter to dance classes and took her kids to see events like the Tall Ships in 1976. Noreen also enjoyed music, card games, and puzzles. She is survived by her loving husband Richard, her son Richard (Rick) and his wife Ginny of Hacienda Heights, CA; her daughter Jan (Mendes) Bairos; grandchildren Joshua Bairos and Hannah Calise; her younger brother John (Jack) Whitters and his wife Ann (Banos) of Taunton, MA; her younger sister Margaret (Peg) (Whitters) Ludovina of Anderson, South Carolina; and numerous nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces. Calling hours will be held at the O’Keefe-Wade funeral home, 70 Washington Street, Taunton, on Tuesday, January 7th, from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral from the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home Wednesday, January 8th at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Saint Anthony’s Church in Taunton at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. The burial will be at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Taunton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association MA/NH Chapter (https://www.alz.org/manh).
