On February 21, 1922, I entered this world at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, MA as an only child blessed with long expectant and loving, caring parents, George Butler and Agnes Brady Butler. George served in the U.S. Army Ambulance Corps during World War I. My Aunt, Nellie Brady, was always a loving second mother. I was named Mary in honor of both of my grandmothers.
There were many happy childhood memories attending Weir Grammar School, Taunton High School class of 1939 and the University of Vermont class of 1943. This gave way to many new friends and sisters of the Delta sorority. My life’s work as a Latin teacher, which was a labor of love and laughter, was spent in Sudbury, Westport, Dighton and Taunton High Schools for 42 years.
My life was shared with my husband Bill Bliss, a man and a name I loved, until his death in 1995. In turn, we were blessed with five truly loved and loving children, predeceased by Mary Lynne Bliss of East Taunton, MA; survived by Sheila Mackie and her husband Robert of Attleboro, MA; Paul Bliss and his wife Susan of Hopkinton, NH; Kerryn Peagram and her husband John of Rehoboth, MA; and Michael Bliss and his wife Susan of Myrtle Beach, SC. We lived on South Street and I previously lived with my son Michael and daughter-in-law Susan at Mary’s museum and photo gallery. As you can read between the lines, my life has been full of love given truly and received gratefully from all people, all kinds, equally.
Beloved as a child by my parents, my classmates, my neighbors, my students (especially Dighton High School class of 1954 and Taunton High School class of 1968) and my cherished extended family of six grandsons, Charles W. Roderigues, Christopher Bliss, Aaron (Casey) Bliss and his wife Cassandra, Michael Bliss, Jr. and his wife Caitlyn, David Peagram and his wife Angela, and James Peagram and my only granddaughter, Lori Brown and her husband Shawn; great granddaughters Ashley Cook, Victoria Roderigues, Samantha Brown, and Kelsie Brown and great grandson Wesley Bliss; and my 3 great-great grandchildren Tristan and Lucas Shaw and Everly Cook. Survivors also include David and Carol Bliss and only cousin Renee Kindt, along with several nieces and nephews.
I loved dogs, travel, foreign lands, people, languages, plants, trees, bicycling, poetry, hymns and TV. I loved to read God’s word at Mass at St. Joseph’s Church (now St. Nicholas of Myra) and at La Salette Shrine. I especially liked to teach in the English as a Second Language Literacy Program from which I learned as well as taught.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Brookdale Senior Living as well as the Compassionate Care team who provided exceptional care for the past three months.
