Gil Narciso DaCosta, 85, peacefully passed away at his home on September 25, 2024. He was the devoted husband of the late Bertha (Rezendes) DaCosta for 63 years and is survived by his brother, Joe Costa of Ontario, Canada and his sister Gloria Claudio of Sao Miguel, Azores. He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Joao Costa of Fall River, Gilherme DaCosta of Taunton, Manuel Costa of New Bedford, and sister Maria Sousa of Ontario, Canada.
Born in Candelaria, Sao Miguel Azores to the late Manuel and Angelina Verisimo DaCosta. He was one of seven children. He immigrated to Ontario, Canada alone at the age of 17 to work and help his family back home. He immigrated to the United States in 1960 and married Bertha, his love of 63 years and settled in Taunton and raised his family.
Gil dedicated 30 years of his life to L.G. Balfour as a machinist and tool maker until health issues necessitated his retirement. He was a man of many trades and talents, he excelled in carpentry, electrical work, and auto mechanics and even played the accordion.
He was a hardworking, inventive, and creative individual who dedicated himself to building innovative devices that eased the burdens of his parents on the family farm. Among his many accomplishments were the construction of an aqueduct for his mother, and various machines crafted from repurposed materials. He even built an electric go-kart. He valued learning and education, self-reliance and the importance of helping others.
Gil enjoyed spending time with family, rebuilding cars, winemaking, travel and vacationing with his family. His love for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren was evident in every moment they shared. As a father figure and role model, he positively impacted countless kids, adolescents and adults and was a true inspiration which left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his son Gil F. DaCosta and his wife Kristine of Taunton, son James DaCosta and his wife Samantha of Lakeville, son Joseph DaCosta of Taunton, and daughter Ann Marie Cosmo and her husband William of Taunton; grandchildren Jessica, Nathan, Kathleen, Brandon, Alissa, Eden Marie, and Derren; great grandchildren Logan, Mathew, and Kiernan, and several nieces, nephews and beloved family members, both immediate and extended.
Family and friends are invited to attend a wake to celebrate Gil’s life on Monday, September 30th 2024 at O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home located at 70 Washington Street, Taunton, from 5-7 PM. A funeral Mass in remembrance of his life will be held at St. Anthony’s Church, 126 School Street, Taunton on October 1st at 11 AM. Following the mass, he will be laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 475 E. Britannia Street, Taunton.
