Eleanor Gilbert Obituary

In Raynham, Eleanor Hoye Gilbert, age 87, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by her loving family on December 13, 2025. Eleanor was the wife of Donald Gilbert, marrying in 1958 in England. She was born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Albert Clement and Eleanor (Hoye) Clement. Eleanor was educated in Taunton schools and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Taunton. She met her husband Donald at a high school basketball game 67 years ago and have been together ever since. Ellie stayed home to raise her children when they were young and then finished her college education at Boston University, majoring in elementary education. She retired from Taunton public schools following 31 years of teaching at the elementary level. Ellie had resided in Taunton, Raynham and England. She cherished her summers at their family cottage at Crescent Beach in Mattapoisett with her family and friends. Ellie is survived by her daughters: Barbara Smith and Debra Abel, Grandmother of : Matthew Smith and his wife Christine, Michael Smith, and Aaron Abel, Great Grandmother of : Cameron and Wesley Smith. The family is deeply grateful for the care Ellie received from her grandson Michael, her family physician, her Hospice Team and during her final week her evening caretaker Martiza. Arrangements are under the care of the O’Keefe Wade Funeral Home in Taunton. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations in Ellie’s name to any non-profit Hospice Care.
