Bennie Abney Obituary

Bennie “Ben” Abney, age 88, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on April 3, 2025 while at Beth Israel Hospital in Plymouth. Bennie is survived by his loving wife, Margaret “Peg” (Grady) Abney of Raynham. He was born in White Oak, Kentucky, the son of the late Willie Abney and Annie (Walling) Abney. Bennie had been a resident of Raynham since 1966. He was educated in Kentucky schools and later served his country honorably while in the U.S. Navy. It was while he served in Newport, RI that he met his wife Margaret. He was a longtime employee of the former Merckens Chocolate Factory in Mansfield where he was a supervisor and machinist before retiring in 1995. Bennie enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, was talented in woodworking, known as a handyman that could fix just about anything and above all loved spending time with his family. In addition to his beloved wife Margaret of 67 years, Bennie leaves his children; William Abney and his wife Susan of Wareham, Michael Abney and his wife Lisa of Dennis, Patricia Pappas and her husband Michael of Lakeville, and Audrey Bumpus and her husband Christopher of Berkley. Bennie also leaves his siblings; Marvin Abney and his wife Margaret of Arkansas, Herman Abney and his wife Peggy of Kentucky, Opal Noland and her husband Shannon of Kentucky, William Abney of Kentucky, and the late Raymond Abney. Bennie also lovingly known as “Papa” leaves his 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Raynham Center on Tuesday, April 15th at 11 am. Visiting hours are kindly omitted. Burial will be at a later date.
